F.A.Q. / DETAILS / Table SUrface, Applying Track

Q: What is the surface used on the table-top, and will it accept track directly pinned to it?

A: For Z, N, HO, and ON3, and S scales we recommend modelers use Dow Blue Styrofoam (Arrow 1) as a table top.  The Styrofoam keeps the table light weight and is a very well used medium in model railroading today.  You cannot simply pin track to Styrofoam.  Although this is a very dense foam it will not sufficiently hold tight to pins or tacks.

We use German Beech hardwoods for our Module End Piece (Arrow 2) and thirteen ply Baltic Birch for our side rails.  Both of these woods are hardwoods.  They will not easily accept a pin.

We suggest modelers use LocTite water based adhesive glue to lay roadbed, track, and other items to Styrofoam or wood on Kam Konnect® tables.  You must not use a petroleum based glue as this will melt the Styrofoam.
Picture
Kam Konnect® tables come with a 1/2" cavity centered in the table between the side rails and the Module End Pieces.  A 1/2" piece of Dow Blue Styrofoam is inserted into the cavity.  Of course Dow Styrofoam is not required.  You can use Homasote, Gatorboard, or elect to purchase Kam Konnect tables with a plywood top.
